Morristown PBIS

Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a framework for organizing strategies to enhance academic and social outcomes using databased decision making. The full description can be found in Minnesota Statute 122A.627. Funding for this program is made possible by a grant from the MN Department of Education, Federal Award CFDA#84.027A – Special Education – Grants to States, IDEA Part B-611.

PBIS is guided by 6 principles:
  1. Develop a continuum of scientifically-based behavior and academic interventions and supports
  2. Use data to make decisions and solve problems
  3. Arrange the environment to prevent the development and occurrence of problem behavior
  4. Teach and encourage prosocial skills and behaviors
  5. Implement evidence-based behavioral practices with fidelity and accountability
  6. Screen universally and monitor student performance & progress continuously
Research generally suggests that if implemented with fidelity, the PBIS practices and systems are associated with:
  • Reduced major disciplinary infractions
  • Improvement in aggressive behavior, concentration, prosocial behavior, & emotional regulation
  • Improvements in academic achievement
  • Enhanced perception of organizational health & safety
  • Reductions in teacher reported bullying behavior & peer rejection
  • Improved school climate
